Head teacher leaves special-measures school

14 February 2014

THE head teacher of St Giles Church of England (Aided) Primary School, in Matlock, Derbyshire, the Revd Julie Stanton, left her post last week, allegedly after pressure from some parents.

Once rated "outstanding", the school was placed in special measures by OFSTED inspectors last June. Their report said that "inadequate leadership" was a contributing problem.

Inspectors who carried out a monitoring visit last month found that insufficient improvement had been made at the school, which is receiving support from the local authority and Derby diocesan education staff.

Local newspapers reported that 15 children had been withdrawn from the school since it had been placed in special measures, and that the governors had received a petition seeking a new head.

Comments published on the website of a local newspaper, the Matlock Mercury, however, suggest that other parents were supportive of Ms Stanton.

The comments say that Ms Stanton, a Non-Stipendiary Minister in Derby diocese, had been the victim of "bullying" and a "vendetta" by a small but vocal group of parents. Other parents praised the pastoral care and Christian atmosphere of the school.

A statement from Derby diocese confirmed that Ms Stanton was "not in the school for the time being". The diocesan board of education was working with the local authority to put in place interim arrangements, the statement said.
