A WEEK before Stir-up Sunday, these two volunteers were up to
their elbows making 60 Christmas cakes for St Ursula's
Christmas bazaar in Berne, a Swiss chaplaincy in the diocese
in Europe. The list of ingredients included
106 eggs, 27 oranges, 25 kilos of dried fruit, and 6 kilos of flour
- plus the brandy.
Everything was mixed and stirred by hand in a plastic bath
before being blessed by the Archdeacon of Switzerland, the Ven.
Peter Potter. Everybody had a stir, and made the traditional wish,
and the cakes were then taken home to bake. They were to be brought
back to church in time for others to decorate.
