Pickles fights ‘PC atheists’

11 April 2014

PA

THE Communities Secretary Eric Pickles has urged "militant atheists" to accept that Britain is still a Christian country.

Speaking at the Conservative Party's spring conference last week, Mr Pickles told delegates: "We're a Christian nation. We have an established Church. Get over it. And don't impose your politically correct intolerance on others."

In 2012, Mr Pickles worked to change the law to protect local councils from legal challenges if they held prayers during public meetings. "I've stopped an attempt by militant atheists to ban councils having prayers at the start of meetings if they wish," Mr Pickles said. "Heaven forbid."

Mr Pickles has publicly defended Christian heritage on several occasions, and last year he said that the previous Labour Government's attempt not to "do God" had "diminished Christianity".
