Quick change

10 January 2014

VERGERS do not usually wear chimneys to verge out a cathedral choir, but that is what Jerome Reed did at the end of the Christmas-morning eucharist in Birmingham Cathedral.

With permission, he did a quick change during the final hymn, discarding his verger's robes in favour of a Father Christmas jumper, beard, and hat, and a painted cardboard chimney edged with cotton-wool snow attached by red braces so that, the Dean, the Very Revd Catherine Ogle, says, it "bobbed gently up and down as he walked".

After the dignity of the liturgy, and the beauty of the Christmas music, she says, "this was a funny and joyful sight, just right for Christmas morning. I feel really proud of our team of vergers, who, though very tired after an exceptionally busy December, still had such a sense of fun after the dismissal.

"The congregation expressed their pleasure with a round of applause for Jeremy."
