Dr Sentamu among 100,000 downloading prayer apps

01 August 2014

ARCHBISHOPS' COUNCIL

MORE than 100,000 people in 140 countries have downloaded a Church House Publishing app in the three years since the first one was launched.

The five different apps are: Daily Prayer, Lectionary, Sunday Worship, Reflections for Daily Prayer, and the seasonable Reflections for Lent.

About 85 per cent of downloads are for an Apple product.

On Monday, the Archbishop of York, Dr Sentamu, said that he had used the Daily Prayer app on a recent trip to Ephesus and Cairo, "so didn't need a suitcase full of books with me - marvellous!"

The Archdeacon emeritus of Southwark, the Ven. Christine Hardman, used the same app on a 2500-mile cycle trip along the east coast of the United States.

The Chaplain to the Bishop of Oxford, the Revd Graham Sykes, described using the app during a beach walk with fellow chaplains: "When someone suggested that it would be great to say Compline there on the beach, we realised that a number of people had the app on their phones; so we gathered around the small screens, and prayed the evening away."
