From the Revd Peter Varney

Sir, - The Very Revd Robert Jeffery ( Letters, 26 July) is correct that he is the last of those who served the Missionary and Ecumenical Council of the Church Assembly (MECCA) in its first years; but some of us who served with MECCA, and remained to be converted into the Board for Mission and Unity of the General Synod, are still alive and kicking; hence this letter.

We should also not forgetthose still extant who served MECCA and the BMU in secretarial roles, including Susan French, whose knowledge of Greek was superior to any of her colleagues'.
