From Prebendary Christopher Tookey

Sir, - I am sure that I am one of many readers who learnt of the death of Christopher Haffner ( Out of the Question, 2 August) with great sadness. His answers to questions on a wide range of subjects were both erudite and helpful, and always very readable; his arguments persuasive without being partisan.

His frequency of reply to questions might have tempted an editor to choose other (perhaps less able) contributors to add variety, but how commendably, if that was a temptation, was it resisted.

Thank you for promising an obituary. It is well deserved, and will help to express the thanks of those who have benefited from his wisdom over the years, besides telling us something more about Mr Haffner himself than we have gleaned from his contributions.
