PROFESSOR Tim Kendall, President of the War Poets Association,
has edited Poetry of the First World War: An
anthology (OUP, £14.99 (£13.50);
978-0-19-958144-3), with an introduction, notes, and an essay on
each poet (and a ribbon marker). He has room for women poets and
music-hall and trench songs, but his principle is "the best poems
in the best order", depth rather than breadth.
BRUCE N. FISK's A Hitchhiker's Guide to Jesus:
Reading the Gospel on the ground follows Norm, a
fictitious US student, who travels to the Holy Land to discover
whether study will help him to follow Jesus more closely or make
him abandon his faith. Fisk includes a wide range of ideas (Baker
Academic, £14.99 (£13.50); 978-0-8010-3606-4).
