Misery: a Syrian refugee shields himself from the rain at a camp in Tyre, Lebanon. On Wednesday of last week, donor countries exceeded the $1.5-billion target set by the UN to help Syrians in need of humanitarian assistance - nearly one in five of the population. The UN secretary-general, Ban Ki-moon, said that Syrians faced "a cascading catalogue of horrors". At least 60,000 have been killed in the conflict
