Ivy House, Warminster: ‘hasty’ closure of another retreat house?

From Janet Robinson

Sir, - On visiting the St Denys Retreat Centre, Warminster, last week - something that our committee does four times a year - we were amazed and deeply saddened to hear that the Trustees of the Community of St Denys intend to make a decision in principle to close it.

This intention appears to have been established with mystifying speed, no consultation or debate, and no obvious cogent reason.

The Retreat Centre, known as Ivy House, has good levels of occupancy, and forward bookings. It is a place of mission, renewal, and outreach. It organises and runs many and varied quiet days, in-house retreats, and meetings for local charities and concerned groups (of any denomination or no faith). It has a calm, warm, and spiritual atmosphere, and appears to fulfil all the criteria of the original Communities' aims.

Why should it be closed? Why the unseemly haste?
