From the Revd Peter Dodson
Sir, - Tonbridge School (Classified, 28 March) has advertised for a "Chapel Verger [for the] care of the sacristy, preparation for services and events, cleaning and general maintenance of the Chapel".

From the age of 14½, I was at boarding school in the 1940s. I was responsible for doing, or overseeing, all of the above tasks, besides being a chorister, organ-blower, and often master of ceremonies. Sunday's eucharistic worship was presented in a glorious Anglo-Catholic style. A further nine boys, trained by me, acted as crucifer, acolytes, cope boys, thurifer and boat boy, and servers.

I treasure that early experience of chapel life. It was, and remains, spiritually powerful and enormously rewarding.
