Fr Benson gets a blue plaque

by
31 May 2013

A BLUE plaque commemorating the founder of the Society of St John the Evangelist (SSJE), Fr Richard Meux Benson, has been placed by the Oxfordshire Blue Plaques Scheme. Fr Benson (1824-1915) championed mission-work in East Oxford before going to India, Canada, and the United States, and his society became known as the Cowley Fathers. Benson's mission-house on Marston Street is now the home of St Stephen's House.  "The legacy of Fr Benson remains immensely important to us here at St Stephen's House," the Principal, Canon Robin Ward, said. "We are custodians of the place where he revived the religious life for men in the Church of England; we worship surrounded by the memory of the Cowley Fathers; we try to continue their religious and social work in the community of East Oxford; and we benefit from their legacy through the Benson scholarships for the support of postgraduate study here." The plaque was dedicated by the Bishop of Oxford, the Rt Revd John Pritchard, earlier this month.
