West Indies rejects same-sex unions
SAME-SEX unions were
"totally unacceptable on theological and cultural grounds", the
House of Bishops and the Standing Committee of the Church in the
Province of the West Indies stated last week. The statement argues
that the Caribbean people have a human right to "affirm their
cultural and religious convictions" regarding the definition of
marriage.
Montgomery church reopens
An Episcopal church in
Montgomery, Alabama, which closed six years ago, in the realignment
of members of its congregation after the election of Canon Gene
Robinson as Bishop of New Hampshire, reopened on Sunday. The Revd
James Muriuki, who will lead services, said: "If I don't talk about
my sexual relationship with my wife at home, there is no reason I
should come and talk about homosexuality in the church."
African churches asked to tackle road deaths
THE prevention of traffic
accidents in Africa could be aided by the "huge and powerful"
resource of faith communities, the Ministry of Safety, an African
road-safety organisation, said last week. Its urges Christians and
Muslims to help to deliver information. The Bishop of Southern
Malawi, the Rt Revd James Tengatenga, saw this "as a gospel
imperative".
