Muffles used after bell complaints

03 May 2013

A DISPUTE over "noise pollution" between Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, and local residents has led to the placing of muffles on the bells.

In an initiative last year, visiting tourists were invited to ring bells, but the inexperienced "ringers" produced a sound that residents felt was irritating. One said that, while the bells were normally enjoyable, their use by untrained people was "just clanging". Dublin City Council has now arranged "to carry out noise monitoring, so that we can gain a clear profile of the nature and level of noise when the bells are operational during these tours".
