Pop-up cathedral

28 March 2013

IT WILL be obvious from this picture that Sheffield Cathedral is in no fit state to contain the large congregation expected for the main Easter Day eucharist. The main building work going on means that there simply will not be enough space. So a solution has been found. Just as there have been pop-up coffee shops, pop-up art exhibitions, and pop-up nightclubs, now they are having a Pop-up Cathedral.

At the invitation of the Master Cutler, the cathedral is moving, for one morning only, to Cutlers' Hall, just across the road. The service will be an orchestral sung eucharist, at which the Bishop of Sheffield will both preside and preach. The setting for the service will be the Schubert Mass in G, and the orchestra will be drawn from some of the finest musicians in the region.
