Twelve-month marathon

26 April 2013

HE WILL take a year to complete his marathon - but he will need it. The Master of Music at Derby Cathedral, Peter Gould, has just embarked on a plan to play for at least 15 minutes on the organ of every church that has one in Derby diocese. He intends to travel by public transport, and to do a deanery at a time, playing some Bach and "something suitable for each instrument". He hopes that people will be encouraged to listen, and to give a donation at the end of each short recital.

He started a couple of Saturdays ago in Bradbourne, before going on to nine further parishes, including those with the wonderful names of Brassington, Carsington, Kirk Ireton, Idridgehay, Wirksworth, and Alderwasley. The money he raises will be shared between local music and the cathedral's music programme. But, more than that, he is hoping that his marathon will raise the profile of organs and music in churches.
