Spring clean-up

26 April 2013

MEMBERS of several different churches, with other volunteers, will be spending their May Bank Holiday cleaning up the Queensway Estate, in Ipswich (St Edmundsbury & Ipswich diocese). The local council approves; a family-run business from Claydon, Sackers Recycling, is providing skips and collection at cost price; and Speed-Style Auto Centre, of Ashbocking, is providing safety equipment and a van to transport recyclable refuse.

The local MP, Ben Gummer, is backing the campaign; a Christian organisation, Heart for Ipswich, has provided a grant to fund the work; and residents on the estate have been asked whether they will give up to four hours on the day to help the clean-up.

Some 50 volunteers will be provided with gloves, high-visibility clothing, and litter-pickers, and also with refreshments as the day goes on. Ten skips are being placed on the estate, and front gardens will be cleared of rubbish and discarded furniture, litter will be picked up, and vacant plots will be tidied.

"I know, myself," Mr Gummer says, "from doing litter-picking rounds in Ipswich, how much you can collect within very little time. If we all did as the Ipswich churches are doing, more often, then we would have a far cleaner, happier town."

If the project proves successful, it is hoped that it will become an annual campaign in other parts of the town as well.
