Prayers requested
after Kenyan violence
A KENYAN priest has called
for prayers for the people of Garissa, a city in eastern Kenya,
where five people were shot dead on Wednesday of last week. The
Somali Islamist group al-Shabab is believed to be behind the
attack. The priest, Canon Francis Omondi, said on Tuesday that
"Muslim fundamentalists . . . aim to get rid of Christians from
here. . . Christians who have not fled live in great fear."
Pope speaks out on
migration
POPE Benedict XVI has drawn
attention to human trafficking and exploitation in a speech marking
the World Day of Migrants and Refugees on 13 January. The Pope said
that these crimes must be "clearly condemned and prosecuted". He
called for "a greater openness to considering individual cases
calling for humanitarian protection more than political
asylum".
Christian centre
opens in Iraq
A CHRISTIAN cultural centre,
said to be the first to be built in the country for a decade, was
opened in Kirkuk, Iraq, on Sunday. The Chaldean Archbishop of
Kirkuk, the Most Revd Louis Sakho, said that it "sends a message of
peace, and promotes the language of dialogue". It is estimated that
there are between 400,000 and 600,000 Christians living in Iraq,
compared with between 800,000 and one million in 2003.
Correction.
We were misled into believing that the Revd Bertie Pearson and Holy
Innocents' Episcopal Church in San Francisco were associated with
the Queen James Bible (
News, 21/28 December). This was incorrect; neither the Revd
Bertie Pearson nor Holy Innocents', had any knowledge of this text
before their attention was drawn to the matter by our article. We
apologise for the error.
