The real thing?

AT THE time of writing, dire weather forecasts suggest that the congregation at St Mary's, Melton Mowbray, in Leicester diocese, has the prospect of indulging in the real thing. At Christmas, when, contrary to Victorian-inspired greetings cards, it rarely snows, the Team Rector, the Revd Kevin Ashby, continues to believe that the congregation should celebrate Jesus's birth with a glorious snowball fight.

In the absence of the real thing, he recently had a bright idea. The members of the parish worked hard at making woollen pompoms, and 250 of them were enthusiastically deployed on Christmas Day. They at least had the merit of not trickling icy water down anyone's neck.
