Still hospitable: this photo of Helen Sinclair's Five Figures of the Almshouse (2003), based on a group of residents of St Mary's Hospital, Chichester, in the 15th century, is from The Hospital of St Mary - Chichester: A history from 1229 to the present (Otter Memorial Paper 34) by Ken Green (University of Chichester, £12.50; 978-1-907852-22-0; from http://store.chi.ac.uk). This architectural gem within the city walls, with its intriguing misericords, has been called by one recent resident "a foretaste of heaven", Dean Frayling's preface says
