Inspired by icons: Sir John Tavener, who died on Tuesday, aged 69. An avant-garde composer admired by the Beatles, he became Orthodox in 1977, going on to write many religious works, such as The Veil of the Temple, given its seven-and-a-half-hour première overnight in the Temple Church, London, in 2003.
