Sacrificial victim: Tollund Man, a hanged man whose mouth and eyes had been closed, and his body arranged in a sleeping position, was found in a Danish peat bog in 1950. It is thought that he was a human sacrifice to a god or gods between 375 and 210 BC. From Tollund Man: Gift to the gods by Christian Fischer, a book first published in Danish in 2007, and now available in English (The History Press, £17.99 (£16.20); 978-0-7524-8635-2)
