Celtic stitching

14 June 2013

AN EXHIBITION of embroidery and textile art, inspired by the Lindisfarne Gospels, has just opened in the Galilee Chapel, in Durham Cathedral, and will be on display until 23 June. It includes this Celtic cross created by Melita Butterell, of the Cathedral Broderers, using a whole range of techniques.

More than 100 members from 12 branches of the north-east region of the Embroiderers' Guild are showing their work, and the exhibition - as well as being entrancing in itself - will whet public enthusiasm for the arrival of the actual Lindisfarne Gospels in Durham next month.

The Gospels, on loan from the British Library, will be on display at the Palace Green Library, part of Durham University and close to the cathedral, from 1 July to 30 September.
