Dr Tutu meets fellow Nobel laureate Suu Kyi
ARCHBISHOP Desmond Tutu
visited the pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, on Tuesday, at
her home in Yangon, Burma. Both are recipients of the Nobel Peace
Prize. Speaking at a press conference afterwards, Dr Tutu said: "It
is wonderful to be here and to see her. We are looking forward to
seeing your country truly free. The potential of this country is
immense."
Norwegian bishop awarded peace prize
THE Emeritus Bishop of Oslo,
in the Church of Norway, Dr Gunnar Stalsett, is to be awarded the
Niwano Peace Prize. It was set up in 1983, named after the first
president of a lay Buddhist organisation, and is given "to honour
and encourage those who are devoting themselves to interreligious
co-operation in the cause of peace". Dr Stalsett will receive 20
million yen (£143,000) at a ceremony in Tokyo in May.
New Bulgarian Patriarch enthroned
PATRIARCH Neofit of the
Bulgarian Orthodox Church was enthroned in Sofia on Sunday.
Translated form Rousse, he succeeds Patriarch Maxim, who died last
year (News,
9 November). The Patriarch, who is 67, become a monk in 1975,
and was consecrated bishop in 1994.
South Korean president calls for nuclear halt in
North
THE new President of South
Korea, Park Geun-hye, used her inaugural address on Monday to urge
North Korea to "abandon its nuclear ambitions without delay and
embark on the path to peace and shared development". The General
Secretary of the World Council of Churches, the Revd Dr Olav Fykse,
said last week that a recent nuclear test carried out by North
Korea on the Korean peninsula was a "destabilising action in a
fragile region".
