Diocesan reorganisation in Yorkshire

From the Revd Richard Burge
Sir, - The General Synod Business Committee has decided to delay a "theologically informed national debate about the organisational shape of the Church" until after Synod has made a decision on the reorganisation of three dioceses in Yorkshire (News , 23 November). The reason given is that such a debate may "prejudice the formal statutory process".

Surely a debate on the wider issue how the Church should be organised can only inform the debate on the specific Yorkshire case. If there is any potential for "prejudice", then it is the possibility that the Synod will be debating a general principle, having already decided on a specific case.
