Salary and stipend

From the Revd Charles Burch

Sir, — During 30 years of secular employment, I grew accustomed to receiving my December salary a little earlier than usual. How reassuring to discover that the Church Commissioners have no truck with this so-called goodwill gesture, which can serve only to encourage wanton expenditure. My payment arrived in my bank on 30 December, just as it should do.

Is this the difference between a salary and a stipend?
