The criminal look?

03 April 2012

From Mrs Celia Bush

Sir, — I was amazed to read under the photo of sixth-formers gathered in St Albans Cathedral (Real Life, 30 March) that “These girls look most unlikely to end up in prison.” Looking respectable and studious does not mean that you may not, at some point in your life, end up as a criminal.

Equally, had it been a picture of scruffy, hangdog-looking boys, would they have been labelled as “likely to end up in prison”? I hope that Church Times readers will never presume to judge an individual on appearances, for good or ill.
