Too dull to be Primate of all England?

From the Revd E. John Penny
Sir, - Several journalists recently suggested that the Crown Nominations Commission decided against a certain candidate for Archbishop because he was "dull".

But does "dull" mean incompetent? Another "dull" figure, Clement Attlee, was, in a recent television programme, voted the most effective post-war Prime Minister. Yet, he was also a PR disaster, having the appearance of a "depressed undertaker".

The media and social networks look for "image" and "charisma" in a potential Archbishop. But experience tells us that these qualities rarely go hand in hand with ability. Surely the question everyone should be asking is simply: "Who can do the job?"
