THE knitters of Truro diocese have been whiling
away the wet days of early summer by knitting hats for sailors. The
Woolly Hat Appeal was launched last May in Truro Cathedral and
other churches, and the target of 120 beanie hats, in an exotic
range of colours, has been reached three months ahead of
schedule.
They are part of the project Sinbad's
Christmas 2012, which provides suitable gifts for the Falmouth
branch of Mission to Seafarers to distribute to seafarers in port
on Christmas Day. It is anybody's guess how many that will be, but
any gifts left over will be carried forward. The main appeal will
be launched in November, and warm, woolly pull-on hats are
especially welcome, among other gifts.
Last year, a team of volunteers and
two chaplains delivered 70 large parcels among the ships then in
port,
to bring some Christmas cheer to the
crews - many of them from distant lands, and long separated from
their families - and they intend to do the same this Christmas.
