Heavenward bound: James Lobley's 1867 painting Little Nell Leaving the Church (The Old Curiosity Shop), is one of many images in Dickens and the Artists, edited by Mark Bills, with contributions by Pat Hardy, Leonée Ormond, Nicholas Penny, and Hilary Underwood, which considers Dickens as an art critic and as an influence (Yale with the Watts Gallery, Compton, whose exhibition of the same title runs until 28 October (£25 (£22.50); 978-0-300-17602-5). www.wattsgallery.org.uk.
