Legal action begun

by
26 April 2012

THE Master of the Song School at Newark Parish Church, George Richford, is to take legal action against the Rector, the Revd Vivian Enever, and the District Church Council for unfair dismissal and defamation, writes a staff reporter. None of the choristers sang in the church on Easter Day because of their support for Mr Richford (News, 20 April).

The Rector said last week that “a line can now be drawn under the matter.” But Mr Richford said this week: “It is very clear that the matter is in no way over, since there will be recourse to an employment tribunal and possibly the courts.”

He said that the issue echoed earlier problems at the church. The former Organ scholar, James White, has instigated two claims to an employment tribunal, including unfair dismissal; and the former Master of the Song School, Roger Bryan, was awarded an out-of-court settlement.

Mr Richford said that he was confident his name would be cleared, and he wished to return to his job.
