Canon Richard Kirton writes:
Further to your obituary of the Rt Revd Anthony
Dumper (
Gazette, 7 September): after he returned to the United Kingdom,
he stayed in contact with the dioceses of Singapore and West
Malaysia, where he served so well. Until recently, he has
frequently visited and befriended people of both dioceses, and a
succession of bishops have been very grateful to him for the
tactful advice and counsel which from time to time he gave. It was
offered only on request, and with real humility, and with an ear
for new insights, challenges and directions.
He chaired the Singapore and West Malaysian Diocesan
Association, from the 1970s until 2010, and led the Association in
its task of being a means through which people who had worked in
Singapore or Peninsula Malaysia could keep in touch. He worked
alongside mission advisers in Lichfield diocese, seeking to make
their partnership with the church in South East Asia creative and
vibrant.
I also wish to underline what Samantha Setchell has said about
his kindness and thoughtfulness. We of the Association are all very
grateful to him.
