Beethoven Gregorian hymn discovery

by
02 November 2012

AN ARRANGEMENT by Beethoven of the ancient Gregorian hymn Pange lingua has been discovered.

The work, which was composed in about 1820, was discovered in a sketchbook in Berlin by Professor Barry Cooper of the University of Manchester.

Professor Cooper said: "If I hadn't seen it in his own handwriting, complete with corrections, I wouldn't have believed it was by him." A recording of the piece in performance can be heard on YouTube.
