Pope's former butler charged

THE former butler to Pope Benedict XVI, Paolo Gabriele, has been charged with aggravated theft, including stealing a cheque for €100,000 (£78,000). A magistrate ruled on Monday that Mr Gabriele should stand trial for stealing confidential papers, which were leaked to the media. Mr Gabriele was reported as saying that he had leaked the documents because of "evil and corruption everywhere in the [RC] Church".
