THIS chalice and paten were made by pupils at Springwell Dene
School, in particular by Andrew Bonallie, aged 13, and Callum
Hawxby, aged 12 (above).
The school backs on to St Mary and St
Peter, Springwell, in Sunderland (Durham diocese),
and provides education for children with emotional and behavioural
difficulties. Some of the boys were given the task of creating the
vessels to replace a broken set used by the church.
"They have come up with a beautifully
crafted chalice and paten," the Curate, the Revd Peter Garvie
(second from right), says. "They have put so much love and
energy into it. They know it is something important for the life of
the church."
The Bishop of Jarrow, the Rt Revd Mark
Bryant (centre), was asked to come to bless the vessels.
He described them as "a very special gift to the church. I just
love the look and feel of the pieces, particularly the plate, or
paten. It has a depth that will hold content very securely, just
like the way God holds each and every one of us."
