Trust the locals, not the private contractors

The idea of contracting out policing is fatally flawed. It needs more community involvement, not less, argues Angus Ritchie

ONE of the Government’s ambitions is to trim what it sees as a bloated public sector. In some areas, this is to be done by the increased involvement of voluntary associations — although the description of this as the Big Society seems to have fallen out of fashion in recent months. In other areas, the preferred method is to invite private contractors to provide public services.

Whatever we make of privatisation of other public services, there are particular worries ...
