Choir takes credit

From the Revd Rhona Floate

Sir, — Roderic Dunnett writes thoughtfully and perceptively about the première of Richard Blackford’s important new work Not In Our Time (Arts, 30 September), in which I was privileged to sing as a member of the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus.

There was, however, a factual error in his piece that I wish to correct: Not In Our Time was commissioned by the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus for its centenary this year, not the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Similarly, it was the Chorus that commissioned Voices of Exile, ten years ago.

The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra played an invaluable part, with superb playing in the two performances given so far, and on the recording, but it is the Chorus that celebrates its centenary this year with this powerful musical exploration of issues that are so challenging for our time.
