Photos: Wetsuit wedding

28 September 2011

Wetsuit wedding: a couple made their wedding vows on a rock half-a-mile out to sea — then celebrated by jumping 20 feet into the water, followed by the elder of the church who married them. Samson Hutson and Becky Watkinson, who wore a white tutu on top of her wetsuit, are both lifeguards and coasteering instructors. Their wedding was held on Hele Rock, near Ilfracombe, on the north Devon coast. They were joined by friends and family, including grandparents. Paul Hanley, an elder of a New Frontiers church in Reigate, led the service. All the guests had to swim to the rock. Mr Hanley met the couple while he was on work experience with the watersports-and-outdoor-activity centre where Mr and Mrs Hutson both work. “Samson and Becky said they couldn’t find a vicar to marry them. I offered to do it, but explained they would have to have a register-office service first. The service I did for them was very traditional in many ways, though without any hymns. . . The rock is a special place for them, and by getting married there, they were showing friends and family what they are passionate about”
