Crossing the Nene

From Mr Richard Hough

Sir, — May I point out a small error (Real Life, 9 December). In medieval times, the villages south of the River Nene which are mentioned in the column were all (with the rest of the archdeaconry of Huntingdon) in the diocese of Lincoln. When the diocese of Peterborough was created out of Lincoln in 1541, the river became the boundary between Peterborough and Lincoln dioceses. It was not until 1837 that the archdeaconry of Huntingdon was transferred from Lincoln to Ely diocese.
