Benn faces discipline charge

THE Bishop of Lewes, the Rt Revd Wallace Benn, is facing charges under the Clergy Discipline Measure, it has emerged.

In a statement, the diocese of Chichester said that it was “aware that the diocesan independent safeguarding advisory group has made a complaint to the Archbishop of Canterbury” concerning Bishop Benn.

It said that the matter now rested with the Archbishop of Canterbury’s office, which would make a decision about whether to proceed with the disciplinary process.

Earlier this year, Bishop Benn and the Bishop of Chichester, Dr John Hind, issued an apology over “weakness in our implementation of our procedures” over the handling of cases of child abuse involving two priests in the diocese, the Revd Roy Cotton and the Revd Colin Pritchard.

A BBC report said that there were inaccuracies given by Bishop Benn to an inquiry into the abuse carried out by Lady Butler-Sloss; the diocese of Chichester, however, has denied that this claim undermined the investigation (News, 22 July).
