Sir, — I am a liberal (or is that pro­gressive?) Chris­tian; so I was pleased to read Canon Ashenden’s review of Ian Bradley’s Grace, Order, Open­ness and Diversity (Books, 11 Feb­ruary), in which the reviewer tells me that I “cannot or will not, grasp the central core of the Hebrew rev­ela­tion: the holiness of the Godhead”.

I have taken “O worship the Lord on the beauty of holiness” as my tag­line for more than 20 years; so I stand corrected. On the other hand, I have never told anyone what they can or cannot, will or will not, be­lieve; and I find sin a perpetual problem.
