CHRISTUS VICTOR by Gustaf Aulén explores the three main types of thinking about the atonement as he saw it (ransom, penal substitution, and moral influence), and offers a reinterpretation, although he is critical of the attempt to systematise such mysteries. This book was first published in 1931, based on lectures that Bishop Aulén gave in Uppsala, Sweden (SPCK, £14.99 (£13.50); 978-0-281-06216-4).

In Jesus: A serious beginner’s guide, David Gates looks in detail at the life and context of Jesus, what he said and what he did. One chapter is a guide to the sights of Jerusalem and surrounding area. There is another section on other characters such as Peter, Judas, Herod, Caiaphas, Mary, and a dictionary of possibly unfamiliar terms (Athena Press, £12.99 (£11.70); 978-1-84748-602-8).
