Parking your vote in Westminster

10 August 2011

From the Revd Mark Beach

Sir, — So Westminster churches are to field candidates for the City Council elections (News, 5 August). I can picture the face of voters confronted with an invitation to “Vote Christian to remove Sunday Parking Charges” — hardly a vote-winner!

Instead, I hope that the churches can put forward candidates who will address the broad range of political and social issues from a Christian perspective. Such councillors would bring their walk with God to discussions on the plight of the homeless, the future of youth provision, and the creation of an inclusive society, to name but a few of the issues.

Oh, and please don’t tell me that the church and politics don’t mix. Just read Luke 4.18 and 19.
