W. R. F. Browning’s A Dictionary of the Bible was first published in 1996. This second edition has been revised and updated, with some new material added. The entries are arranged alphabetically, except those for the books of the Bible, which are grouped in the middle (OUP, £11.99 (£10.80); 978-0-19-954398-4).

Robert Alter’s translation and commentary The Book of Psalms now comes in a paperback format. He seeks to emulate the Hebrew rhythms as closely as he can — though he admits that is a difficult task — and to produce a version that takes the literary quality of the translation seriously (Norton, £13.99 (£12.60); 978-0-393-33704-4).

These books are available from the Church Times Bookshop.
