From Mr G. M. Lyon
Sir, — I hope that Richard Taylor’s new BBC series Churches: How to read them is as good as he says it is (Features, 27 August), but he is wrong to suggest a lack of previous high-quality programmes on the glories of churches.
Perhaps he is too young to remember the classic BBC series Discovering English Churches, written by Richard Foster and presented with characteristic vim by the amateur church enthusiast Donald Sinden.
If Taylor’s effort delivers the same quality for this generation, he will be doing well. If his series is of use to today’s GCSE students studying churches as an example of “History Around Us” or the Citizenship aspects of what to do with redundant churches, even better.
