A college that is strangely hard to locate

01 September 2010

From the Revd Jane Shaw

Sir, — Your readers may wish to be aware of a current scam, which, I think, is directed at the clergy. I received a letter, addressed to me correctly as the Revd, purporting to be from an orphaned girl in Uganda, Angella Namayanja.

She wanted to complete her nursing training at a St Anne’s Nursing and Midwifery College, Kampala, and was asking for money for the fees (£675 quoted in sterling). It was a good letter, and, in researching it, I found that St Anne’s College even has a website. But I asked the “Principal” by email for the physical location of the college, and a Ugandan friend searched the locality, but failed to find it . . . though he did find many people saying others had also searched unsuccessfully and “it must be a good trick.”

I have informed Mr John Bwanika, the “Principal”, that I believe this to be a fraud — and have had no reply. Let others be warned.
