SODOR & MAN: Webcam link for baptism

18 May 2010

by Margaret Duggan

IT WAS a case of nothing daunted in the diocese of Sodor & Man. When the volcano in Iceland prevented one of the godparents reaching St German’s Cathedral, in Peel, for a family baptism, he was still able to take part in the ceremony.

Graham Christian was temporarily trapped in Shanghai, where he works, and had to cancel his plans

to return to the Isle of Man for the christening of his nephew, Frank Christian Kelly, son of Ellen and Chris Kelly. But thanks to the internet, a video conferencing link was the solution.

With the support of the Revd Nigel Godfrey, Sub-Dean at the Cathedral, it was possible to set up a laptop next to the font. This allowed Mr Christian to watch the service by webcam, and to take part fully in making his promises as a godparent. He still has not met his nephew, but says he hopes it will be possible in the near future.
