Thinking out of the box: Brian Wherry, aged 72, has just finished a model of Exeter Cathedral in his spare bedroom. It took ten months and 35,500 matches to complete. Mr Wherry, a retired carpenter, visited the cathedral with a surveyor’s rod and took measurements, which he then scaled down to four feet by 18 inches. His hobby began six years ago when invalided from work: his son presented him with a model kit of Big Ben, that used 1000 matches. Since then he has made Notre Dame Cathedral, Tower Bridge, and the Royal Albert Bridge, and he hopes to start work on the Sydney Opera House. He estimates he has used 750,000 matches so far. Exeter Cathedral is interested in displaying the model.
