This Alice in Wonderland Communion

From the Revd Gill Cooke

Sir, — The Archbishop of Canterbury states that the Anglican Communion has not “found a way of shaping our consciences and convictions as a worldwide body” on the subject of sexuality (News, 4 June). This is not surprising.

Most provinces in the Communion have failed to carry out the resolutions on sexuality made in repeated Lambeth resolutions since 1978, i.e. the “deep and dispassionate study of the question of homosexuality which would take seriously both the teaching of scripture and the results of scientific and medical research”. It also commended those member Churches who were already studying the issue (Lambeth resolutions 1978).

Now it seems that the Archbishop wishes to punish those like the Episcopal Church in the United States who have done what the resolutions called for, and to reward those who have ignored them. Why? It’s an Alice in Wonderland world in the Anglican Communion.
