From Mr David Webster

Sir, — It was gratifying to see in her report of the opening of the General Synod (News, 26 November) Margaret Duggan chiding so gently the Archbishop of Canterbury for his assertion that the Queen was the only person present who was at the first General Synod of 1970.

In fact, Margaret was an elected lay member of that first Synod, and since then she has written full yet concise reports of many meetings of the Synod and of matters relating to it, not least her helpful summary, before each meeting, of the business to be discussed and debated.

The Church as a whole and particularly past and present members of the General Synod have much to thank Margaret for; and long may she continue her writing for the Church Times.
